Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu announced today, Monday, that Russia's nuclear-powered deterrent weapons are on high alert.

Specifically, the Minister spoke about the Strategic Missile Forces, the Northern and Pacific Fleet, and the Long-Distance Aviation Forces.

Putin ordered the move in response to aggressive statements from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

In a video clip released by the Kremlin on Sunday, Putin spoke of deterrent weapons but did not explicitly mention nuclear weapons.

He added, "Eminent figures in NATO countries allow aggressive statements against our country, so I order the Minister of Defense and the Chief of the General Staff to put the deterrent forces of the Russian army on a special alert system."

Today, Monday, the Russian and Ukrainian delegations began their first talks since the beginning of the Russian escalation in Ukraine.
