the man in the iron lungn - read4topic

The story of the "iron lung" is a human miracle.

man... he has not left it for 70 years

The hero of the story, Paul Alexander, sets a wonderful example of resilience, content to live for decades on the line between life and death, looking only at life with his head, while the rest of his dead body lies in a metal tube.

Alexander did not give in to pain, frustration, and helplessness and adapted to his new life and his small world that he did not leave, and he became a source of inspiration, visited by the frustrated and those who were about to loosen their grip on life to learn from him the ABCs of endurance and to struggle with the troubles of the soul with the pain of survival.

American Paul Alexander has been confined to an iron device for more than sixty years due to a rare virus.

  • That weakened his breathing.

During the next five days of his polio diagnosis, Paul Alexander lost the ability to move or breathe and was declared dead in the hospital before a doctor intervened with a tracheostomy, or opening the neck to place a tube in the windpipe.

Paul, 70, lived in a huge iron machine for about 64 years due to being infected with the rare poliovirus in 1952, which causes polio and muscle relaxation and weakness.

The poliovirus causes poor breathing, so Paul was forced from a young age to use the iron lung device to help him breathe by creating an environment of oxygen around him that forced him to breathe almost naturally.

The patient lies inside the device and nothing is left of his body outside of it except his head.

There is a rubber roll around his neck that prevents air from leaking out.

The pump pulls air from the tank 15 to 30 times in one minute, and then the patient’s chest rises to enter the air through the nose and mouth.

It is remarkable that Paul did not succumb to his health crisis, but was able to study law at the University of Texas until he became a lawyer with a good reputation." It's like a prison to me, but it's the cocoon I can't do without," says Paul.

He went on to study law, pass the bar exam, and start writing a book with only his mouth.

In a movie produced by the "Mitch Summers" channel on YouTube, the man says that he refused to be defeated by polio, stating: "A lot of people didn't like me at that time, and I felt uncomfortable being around me."

The most difficult part was when Paul's device was damaged in 2015, when he resorted to a short video recording of himself describing his suffering and posted it on YouTube, calling on anyone who repairs devices to try to save the situation.

The video arrived by chance to one of the directors of major environmental laboratories, who managed to repair the device in his laboratory so that Paul regained his chance of survival again.

It is worth noting that Paul is not the only one, but there are many cases similar to him spread all over the world.

In a message to inspire others, Powell asserts that a human being is capable of doing anything, regardless of his background, his past, or the magnitude of the challenges he faces.
