crocodiles

Crocodiles are more closely related to dinosaurs than they are to most animals classified as reptiles, and unlike other reptiles, they are the most complex biologically. It has a four-chambered heart and a cerebral cortex, in addition to the acute and powerful senses, which include the following:

  • Smell: The crocodile has an effective olfactory system, which makes it able to detect both air-borne and water-soluble chemicals, and this helps it detect animal or prey carcasses on land or in water from afar.

  • Vision: Crocodiles have the so-called third eye cover in the inner corner of the eye, which guards underwater with the possibility of vision remaining to a certain degree, in addition to having good night vision because of the back wall of the eye, or the so-called transparent carpet, which reflects the light out through the retina, thus taking advantage of the amount of light available at night.

  • Hearing: Alligators can hear well, as their tympanic membranes are hidden by flat flaps that may be raised or lowered by muscles. NS

  • Touch: Crocodiles have sensory devices known as pressure dome receptors that cover both the upper and lower jaws through sensory pits, which are small black spots on the skin, as they contain nerve fibers capable of responding to the slightest disturbance in surface water, and this makes the crocodile able to detect prey, danger, and intruders even in complete darkness.

  • The relationship of crocodiles to humans

crocodiles

Crocodiles are one of the most dangerous animals to humans due to their ability to hit and attack before the other party can interact, and examples of this are the hundreds of people who die every year in parts of Southeast Asia and Africa by saltwater crocodiles and the most dangerous Nile crocodiles.

But at the same time, crocodiles are kept in reserves and used commercially, including the exploitation of their hard skins to make various leather products such as handbags, shoes, belts, and hats. Some countries, such as Vietnam and the Western world use crocodile meat as a source of delicacy, while some other peoples such as Australia, Ethiopia, Thailand, South Africa, China, and Cuba cook crocodile meat in the form of pickled, while others use crocodile oil for different purposes.
